Mobile bidding lets people submit auction bids from a phone or another mobile device. Depending on the platform, bidders use a mobile website, an app or supported text-message commands. They can review items, place bids and check their status digitally. Registration, notifications and payment steps depend on the service and the organizer's settings.
Mobile bidding describes how a person participates. A silent auction describes the auction format: people place bids without an auctioneer calling each bid aloud. An online auction describes the digital setting. One fundraising event can use all three.
How the bidder journey works
A supporter receives an auction link or scans a QR code. They open the catalog and register if the auction requires it. Before bidding, they review the item, its restrictions, the current price and the next valid bid.
After submitting a bid, the supporter checks that the system accepted it. Some services provide outbid alerts or automatic bidding up to a chosen maximum. Others require bidders to return and check their status. The closing rule determines when bidding finishes, after which successful bidders follow the event's payment and collection instructions.
For a simple illustration, a $100 gift card starts at $30 with a $5 increment. Alex bids $30 from a phone. Jo then bids $35. If Alex wants to bid again, the next minimum is $40, assuming no other accepted bid has arrived. An outbid message can prompt Alex to return, but the accepted bid record determines the current position.

Browser bidding and app bidding
| Approach | What the bidder does | What the organizer should check |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile website | Opens the auction in a phone's browser | Registration, browser compatibility and the full payment journey |
| Dedicated app | Installs or opens an application | Download requirements, supported devices and onboarding instructions |
| Supported text bidding | Sends commands in the format required by the service | Accepted commands, confirmation, fees if applicable and fallback access |
Choose based on the real experience your supporters will have. “Mobile bidding” does not establish that an auction needs an app or that it works without one. Ask the provider to show a new bidder's first visit, rather than only the organizer dashboard.
The FrontStream mobile bidding support article provides one example of registration, browsing and bidding. Its specific workflow belongs to that service; it is not a guarantee of what every platform includes.
How mobile bidding compares with paper
With a paper bid sheet, a participant writes an identifier and amount beside the item. The organizer collects the sheets and checks the winning entries. With mobile bidding, the software records accepted bids and makes the current position available through its digital interface.
Paper can be familiar for a small local event. Mobile participation can allow people to bid while away from the display table and, when the event permits it, from outside the venue. Digital participation also introduces device access, registration and connectivity considerations.
Choose a format your team can administer and your audience can use. Mobile bidding does not itself guarantee more bids or higher proceeds. Item appeal, turnout, pricing, communication and the bidder experience still matter.
For an event that combines remote and in-person guests, maintain one official bid record per item. If a volunteer helps someone place a bid, enter it through the same approved process rather than creating an unconnected paper competition.
Plan for people who need help
Make instructions short and easy to find. Show the auction link as text as well as a QR code, so there is another way to open it. Give participants a clear place to ask about registration, item restrictions or payment.
Check the venue connection and provide an assisted-bidding option that your system and rules support. Before a volunteer submits a bid for someone, confirm the item and amount with that person. Explain how they will learn the outcome and complete payment.
Test notifications, but do not make a last-second alert the only way a supporter can understand the deadline. Delivery can depend on the platform, the chosen contact method and connectivity. Keep the closing time visible in the auction itself.
Questions to ask before choosing mobile bidding software
Ask the provider to demonstrate these decisions in a realistic bidder journey:
-
Does a bidder need an account, app or payment method before placing a bid?
-
How does the system show a bid was accepted and the next minimum amount?
-
Which alerts are available, and what setup or consent do they require?
-
Are automatic maximum bids, reserves and Buy It Now options supported?
-
Does a late bid extend the closing time, and can the organizer choose the rule?
-
How are payments, unpaid winners and item collection recorded?
-
What can volunteers do when a bidder needs help or the venue connection fails?
-
What are the total relevant software, platform, payment and messaging charges?
The right answers depend on your fundraiser. A short local auction and a multi-day remote event may need different levels of support.
Common mobile bidding questions
Is mobile bidding the same as donating by text?
Mobile bidding submits an offer for an auction item. A text donation supports a cause through a donation workflow. A platform may offer both, but the participant's action and outcome differ.
Do winners always pay automatically?
No. Some services can charge a stored payment method under their rules; others require the winner to complete checkout. Confirm the actual process before the auction starts.
Can someone use a computer instead of a phone?
Many web-based auction services support computer browsers too. Check the chosen provider's supported devices and publish the options available for your event.
